Sunday Gospel A central part of the Christian faith is the ability we have to welcome others. In our

own country, many of us are proud of the ‘Failte’ we extend to people who come to visit or live here.

Irish Catholics left these shores over many generations and made a living for themselves in practically

every country in the world. Perhaps we are not used to seeing Ireland as an attractive place to live.

However, for many facing asylum, or exile, it is a place to feel safe and be treated as an equal human

being. Despite what some people might think, there is room for everyone here and very few are denied

basic human rights, for that we should be grateful to God. Jesus spent his life and mission giving us

the example of how to embrace other people into our lives. Welcoming others with simple gestures or

offering practical help is essential to the Christian way of life. If we only look after those who look

after us, we enter into a meaningless routine of selfishness and greed and do not deserve the name of

Christian, never mind Catholic. ‘Anyone who does not take his cross and follow in my footsteps is not

worthy of me.’ (Fr S Crumptor).
