Third Sunday of Easter, Year A

Sunday Gospel poses for those who are gathered for the Eucharist with several questions to see have we understood Luke’s vision of what Mass should be: Do we see our weekly meeting as a moment when we hear the Word? Do we see our gathering as gathered around theLord’s table? Do we see our eating together as having a share in the Lord’s body? Do we see our group as one Christian body a unity formed from individual people symbolised in the one loaf (or a unity from individual grains)? Do we see this as meeting with the Risen Jesus? Do we see this as empowering us to go from this meal to proclaim the good news? These are the questions the Emmaus Story poses to us at our gathering — they are probably different questions from those it posed to its first audience, but in answering them we come not only to a deeper appreciation of today’s gospel, but to a realisation of its object: a deeper appreciation of the Sunday Eucharist. S. Lewis — a writer who had a remarkable gift for expressing Christian faith through imagination and story. In creating the character of Aslan the lion, Lewis offers a powerful picture of Christ that continues to speak to readers of all ages. A one hour presentation brings together live music and dramatized readings. It offers children and adults a gentle way to reflect on themes of goodness, sacrifice, courage, and faith. It is suitable for children of primary school age and upwards and is designed to be both engaging and thought-provoking. In a time when it can be difficult to be open conversations about faith, this provides a natural and imaginative way to do so together as a family. Admission is free. Everyone is most welcome. Bishop Alan McGuckian will celebrate mass to mark the First Anniversary of the death of Pope Francis in St Peter’s Cathedral Tuesday 21 April 2026 at 7pm. All are welcome. Precious Life invites young people to a Pro-Life Apologetics Day on Saturday, 25 April from 2:00–4:00pm at St Mary’s Church Hall, Chapel Lane, Belfast. This session will help equip youth to respond confidently and compassionately to pro-life questions. Free pizza will be provided afterwards. For more info, contact 07956 451655. Prayer for Vocations God, our Father, at the very beginning of your Church, your Son, Jesus, chose twelve apostles to continue the work he had begun. By the power of your Holy Spirit, they continued to bring the Good News of your love to our world. Send that same Holy Spirit into the hearts of those you are calling to serve as priests for your people in our diocese. Fill them with your gifts of wisdom, understanding, piety and knowledge as they discern your will. Give them the gifts of right judgment and courage in following their call. Through the outpouring of your grace may many come to the joy of knowing and responding to the invitation of Jesus to ‘Come, follow me!’ Amen. Good Shepherd, hear our prayer. St Joseph, pray for us. Messenger Magazine If you would like a monthly copy of The Messenger, please contact the parish office.St Vincent De Paul Helpline No. 028 90351561: Email address: info@svpni.co.uk Website address:    www.svp.ie/get-help.aspx
